Dizziness and imbalance are common problems, possibly second only to low back pain in the frequency of occurence in the adult population. A person with these symptoms may become frustrated, embarrassed or depressed. People with dizziness or imbalance may find that they avoid positions or activities that cause their symptoms.
Fortunately, some forms of dizziness and imbalance can be treated by vestibular physical therapy.
Physical therapy uses exercises or physical proceduers to reduce or eliminate the symptoms and/or the causes of dizziness or imbalance. It accomplishes this by helping the brain compensate or substitute for loss of inner ear function. Other exercises improve balance by promoting strength, coordination and physical conditioning.
Conditions we treat
- Benign positional vertigo
- Uncompensated inner ear infections
- Bilateral inner ear loss of function
- Imbalance related to stroke and head trauma
- Loss of balance after inner ear surgery
- Undiagnosed imbalance after medical work up by your physician
Dizziness can be the result of many things; therefore, before obtaining a referral to a physical therapist for treatment, we recommend that you see your physician, otolaryngolist or neurologist to have a diagnosis made.
